The Story of France Told to Boys and Girls by Mary MacGregor Illustrated with Twenty Plates in Colour by William Rainey London: T.C. & Jack, Ltd., First Edition, 1920 (undated) Bound in a handsome blue cloth with gold gilt lettering to the spine and front panel. This early edition is printed on thick pages with an uncut textblock, and the binding remains tight with no seam splits. Mary MacGregor’s The Story of France presents a comprehensive history from the Roman conquest of Gaul through to the Franco-Prussian War of the late 19th century. Written in a narrative style accessible to younger readers, it recounts the lives and deeds of French heroes and rulers including Vercingetorix, Clovis, Charlemagne, Roland, Rollo the Viking, St. Louis, Joan of Arc, Charles the Bold, Bayard, Henry of Navarre, Louis XIV, and Napoleon Bonaparte. The volume is enhanced by twenty colour plates by William Rainey, bringing to life moments such as the battles of Agincourt, Crecy, and Waterloo, Joan of Arc’s leadership at Orleans, and Napoleon’s campaigns. A notable first edition, combining literary and illustrative value, as well as a sweeping view of French history told in story form. Happy to discuss shipping options!
