Here's a real must-have for every tinker, tailor, farmer, or fool: an ancient General Electric 1/4 120v AC motor. Quite heavy (lotsa copper, and magnets), and lotsa torque, too. It will quite likely outlive us all. Attached to a 1978 Ford oil pump (my home-made vegoil transfer pump), this thing rocks--in fact it will pump rocks! All this is mostly true.
