Basil is approximately 2 years old and is likely a German Shepherd cross given his body structure and tiny while blade on his chest. My rescue specifically got Basil out of the San Bernadino, California shelter for an adoptive family in Bellingham, Washington. He was with that family for one month and they decided to re-home him because he had been ‘stress peeing’ and the husband didn’t like it. I wouldn’t allow that so Basil is now on south Vancouver Island in my rescue. What I know about Basil: He was picked up as a stray and taken to the high kill shelter. He was in the shelter for 2 months and then got signed off to be killed due to the length of time in the shelter. He had been kennelled with multiple other dogs during his two months. He had all his vaccines in the shelter and I had him neutered, rabies vaccine and treated for Giardia and tapeworm. He is currently 60 pounds and he’s underweight by 15-20 pounds. We’re working on him getting some pounds on him. He has a sweet temperament and he’s very tactile. He will stand beside you for as long as you will pat him and give him rubs. He’s undergone a lot of stress during the past 6 months and who knows what his life was like prior to that. Probably not that great if he landed in the shelter and nobody claimed him. While at the adoptive home he was with a 2.5 year old submissive female Malinois and they got along just fine. He is currently not with my dogs because he’s too overwhelmed with all of the changes. He is a very good eater and is highly food motivated. At this time I’m not training him until he’s had time to decompress and settle in although we are working on recall, sit and wait. He had been on a full kibble diet and I have him on one kibble feed and one raw feed to try and lower the stench and voluminous poops. He is crate trained and likes to be in his crate. It’s a place where he can truly relax and get some much needed sleep. Basil is in his crate when I’m away from the house, rotating dogs and at bedtime. He loves going for a car ride and rides in a crate when in my vehicle. Basil likes to play with toys although I keep squeaky balls away from him because he fixates too much on them. Since having Basil in my home, he has not stress peed once, wether it be inside or outside. I get him outside often and if he does his business he gets a steak reward every time. I want him to learn to potty as soon as he goes out rather than sniffing around for 20 minutes! He has not been off property for leashed walks yet as he needs time to adjust before I get him out there in the big world. At this point I don’t know if he has any leash manners at all. He doesn’t know he’s safe yet and he doesn’t need the added stress. What I’m looking for in an adopter: Either no kids or teenage+ kids that are respectful to animals. A larger breed savvy home with the knowledge and patience to give this boy a chance to adjust to a new home and work on his obedience once he’s settled in. He is an inside dog and won’t go to a home that has no intention of having him indoors as part of their family. He needs a secured fenced yard and if he’s outside he must be under supervision. He has not scanned my fence to get off my property although he was in a 6’ dog pen chewing on a bone and once he finished the bone, he must have scaled the fence to get out and come trotting back into the house. He can be a velcro dog and once he’s fully decompressed and his training starts I’m sure that he won’t feel obligated to get back to the house. If Basil sounds like a dog that would fit into your lifestyle and home life, please connect and we can discuss further.
