Against a backdrop of rising seas and cultural reclamation, Pacific Peoples’ Partnership (PPP) is bringing back its beloved One Wave Gathering this September, a colorful, free event that blends together art, advocacy, and ancestral wisdom from Indigenous and Pacific Island communities. Now in PPP’s 50th year, the gathering will take place at the Royal BC Museum on Saturday, September 20, from 11 AM to 3 PM, offering a full day of performances, film, and meaningful dialogue, all centered on themes of resilience in the face of climate change and cultural erosion. “This isn’t just an event, it’s an act of solidarity,” says Dr. Mere Tari Sovick, Executive Director of PPP. “We’re creating space for voices that have been marginalized but have never been silent. Their stories aren’t just part of history, they’re pathways toward a more just future.” Attendees can expect an immersive experience: Powerful live performances by Indigenous and Pasifika artists in Clifford Carl Hall. An impactful screening of YUMI, the documentary following Pacific law students as they take the fight for climate justice to the International Court of Justice. Interactive art and artifact displays telling stories of adaptation and strength. Community dialogue sessions (Talanoa) encourage honest conversation about land, ocean, and identity. PPP, Canada’s only registered charity focused specifically on Pacific and Indigenous partnerships, has worked for nearly five decades to support community-led initiatives across Oceania and here in Canada. One Wave is one of their most public, and powerful, efforts to bring those connections to life. The event is free and open to all. No registration is required. About Pacific Peoples’ Partnership: For five decades—50 years—Pacific Peoples’ Partnership has worked alongside Indigenous and South Pacific communities to support self-determined development, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation. Through programs, partnerships, and events like One Wave, PPP amplifies voices and visions from across the Pacific—on both sides of the ocean.
