Footprints: Pioneer Families of the Metchosin District, Southern Vancouver Island 1851-1900 Hardcover, 1983, 316 pages. Dustjacket is in poor condition. While the chief purpose in compiling this book was to record the first half century of settlement in Metchosin, the finished product makes fascinating reading. One can read of encounters with predatory animals, of stories at sea, of events that were looked forward to for months, and situations that brought smiles and chuckles to the faces of a persevering hard-working community. Land clearing, crop production, building roads where trails had been, seeing that the community had a school and church, all these challenges made them a self-reliant independent breed whose word was as good as their bond. Sickness and disaster brought them together and neighbour helped neighbour whenever the need arose. Such events have been recorded in this book, with the sincere wish that it will provide both an interesting and informative record of those that made their footprints in the Metchosin district.
