Our Sidney Knitters and Crafters volunteers have been meeting every week for many years and the knitting output is tremendous! The items they knit / crochet are sent to The Compassionate Warehouse for shipment around the world and to the Canada Comforts Society for distribution on Vancouver Island and in Northern Canada. WHAT OUR GROUP NEEDS AND COLLECTS: COTTON YARN (any brand, any colour) for wash cloths that become part of maternity, geriatric and other kits. ACRYLIC YARN (any brand, any colour) for afghans /prayer shawls / baby blankets for distribution locally (including to women’s shelters in Duncan) and overseas. ASSORTED YARN (any fibre, any colour) for cold weather hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, socks and teddy bears which are sent overseas. (1400 pure wool hats were sent to schools in northern Canada in 2024.) COTTON OR COTTON BLEND FABRIC for clothing and kit bags. PUL WATERPROOF FABRIC for diapers, hospital bibs and menstrual pads SEWING ACCESSORIES which are added to sewing kits requested by overseas teachers CRAFT SUPPLIES which are used overseas in therapy sessions with children ART SUPPLIES which are used in therapy sessions and teaching Any supplies which we cannot immediately use are shared with local groups who work towards similar aims. We appreciate delivery to our church in downtown Sidney but pick-up is also possible. Please pass on this ad to friends who may be downsizing, destashing, or looking for a good home for a loved one’s craft supplies. A RECENT UPDATE FROM THE COMPASSIONATE WAREHOUSE: Since November 2024 Seacan containers have been sent to Sierra Leone, Uganda and the Ukraine. They are packing another Seacan to leave for Sierra Leone before Dec. 31, 2024. The bulk of the Seacans hold medical and educational supplies — the knit, crocheted and sewn items are used as stuffing instead of packing peanuts. This way, when the container doors are opened at the destination, the Seacan is stuffed full of usable items.
