Here is a significant vintage Chinese Celadon Brush Washer. Longquan is the centre of Celadon pottery-making in China. Celadon green is used extensively as it is the colour of jade which is culturally honoured and treasured. This brush washer is an exquisite colour. The large bowl measures 7.75 inches in diameter, and stands 1.75 inches high. The heavy piece weighs 688 g. (1.5 pounds) The embossed curvilinear decoration on the belly of the vessel mirrors the swirl of water within as each brush is washed. A seemingly simple design, but perfectly fitting. The glaze is clear and crisp, with no apparent crackle. There is one minor firing flaw in the glaze - please look at picture #3 carefully. (Just to the left of the bottom rim, at about 9:00 o'clock) The edge of the bottom rim has been levelled to remove glaze overflow from the firing. This is standard procedure. The maker's stamp appears on the unglazed circle-centre on the bottom. This is an unusual piece of Celadon. It is a weighty piece, and has been well-cared for. Highly collectible, this treasure would be a great purchase for any Celadon afficionado. Please call 250 658-0587 to view.
