Calling all Red Seal mechanics: Get rolling on a rewarding new career today! image

If you’ve ridden the BC Transit bus lately, you’ve likely shared a ‘thank you’ to the driver for getting you safely to your destination. But have you thought about the team behind the scenes who keep the buses rolling?

BC Transit is looking for mechanics to join their team here in Victoria and Langford, with positions available at both locations, says Dan Campbell, BC Transit Maintenance Manager in Victoria.

Anyone with Red Seal certification is encouraged to apply, including Heavy Duty Mechanics and Commercial Transport Mechanics, as well as Automotive Mechanics, who may also be considered, depending on their training and experience.

“Primarily we need that Red Seal certification – we can train the right person and familiarize them with our equipment,” Campbell says, highlighting a willingness to learn and being committed to doing a good job as key attributes.

Under the direction of maintenance supervisors or designated tradespersons, mechanics inspect, troubleshoot, test, repair, and perform maintenance on brake systems, suspension, engines, hydraulics, electrical, air conditioning, fuel systems, transmissions, and driveline components, in addition to identifying and ordering parts, and rebuilding components.
There’s a lot to like about working on our local buses, too.

“BC Transit employees receive the BC Public Service pension plan, along with amazing health and dental benefits, mental health support, and onsite gyms. In addition to competitive wages and benefits, here at BC Transit, you’ll be working inside in a warm, dry shop, which often isn’t the case for these kinds of mechanic positions,” Campbell notes.

The positions are full-time, with day, evening, weekday, and weekend opportunities and a flexible shift schedule – typically 10-hour shifts with four days on and three off, supporting that work-life balance.

“The team here is a real mix of those new to BC Transit, those who’ve been here for 10 to 15 years, and others for 20-plus years,” Campbell says.

“We support with ongoing education and training for all our mechanics, and our senior mechanics are here to support newcomers as they transition into their new roles.”

A union shop, BC Transit offers competitive wages, with paid overtime and shift premiums for those working evenings and weekends, along with extended benefits including medical, dental, and pension. While personal tools are required, many equipment-specific tools are supplied, Campbell notes.

Team members also enjoy access to fitness and lifestyle centers, Health and Wellness initiatives, an Employee Assistance Program, complimentary employee bus pass (plus taxable dependent passes), a Corporate Learning and Development Program, Employee Recognition Program, and a Social Club that offers access to events throughout Greater Victoria.
