Each of them can be used standalone, but they're intended to be meshed together to cover your whole house. $40 for one $60 for 2 Having tried several brands of mesh router, Google's is the simplest to get working, with automatic mesh building. You can optionally connect them together with Ethernet for a cable backbone, or forgo the cables for wireless mesh. Most homes probably only need 2-3.
