Position Introduction: Capital Bike is seeking engaging, professional, and enthusiastic Instructors for its Everyone Rides Grades 4 and 5 (ERG45) in-school bike education program. Reporting to the Bike Education Coordinator, ERG45 Instructors are trained to deliver the region’s largest cycling education program. Instructors work in a fun environment and train thousands of elementary students each year. Through two-day bike safety workshops consisting of classroom presentations and on-bike sessions in local elementary schools, we teach kids the skills and knowledge they need to ride their bikes to school and around their neighbourhoods, instilling a lifelong love of biking. We are looking for someone who is: • Passionate about cycling and helping kids learn fundamental skills; • Experienced or interested in educating kids and youth; • Skilled in motivating diverse groups of kids to stay engaged during classroom and on-bike education; • Organized, dependable, Duties and Responsibilities • Lead in-class presentations and teach bicycle skills and lead supplemental lessons/activities; • Oversee safety and risk management while on school grounds; • Record and submit hours of instruction; • Assist with program set-up and take-down; Skills and Experience • Experience and interest teaching of youth ages 8 to 12; • Leading and engaging youth in groups ranging in size from 10 to 24; • Collaboration and problem-solving with co-workers in a fun, supportive environment; • Patience, punctuality and accountability; • Strong communication skills; • Willing to take on leadership roles; • Working outdoors in varied conditions; Assets • Strong cycling skills; • Knowledge of bike mechanics; • Multilingual; Requirements • Must be willing to complete Learn2Ride cycling instructor training (paid); o Training is scheduled for March 27-30 • Must pass a vulnerable sector criminal record check; • Must possess, or willing to obtain, a valid Basic First Aid/CPR-C certificate; Pay • Qualified candidates will be paid $25/hour to start, including pay for instructor training; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Capital Bike seeks to improve the diversity of our workforce by focusing on equity, and a culture of inclusion. Terms and full description: Instructors will work under the direction of the Bike Education Coordinator to deliver ERG45. This is a part-time, seasonal position. This role works 100% on-site at Elementary Schools within the Capital Region and Gulf Islands. Ride sharing is often arranged and Instructors are not required to have an automobile. ERG45 runs from April to June and September to October, each year. Instructors work 3-4 days/week. Typical work hours are 9:00am to 2:30pm for in-class days and 8:30am-3:00pm for on-bike days. Instructors can work up to 22 hours/week. Instructors may choose which teaching opportunities fit their schedules. Successful candidates are required to attend and complete instructor training. Candidates are paid for the training. Instructors will be encouraged complete the Bike Skills Instructor training so that they may teach the full range of cycling courses offered by Capital Bike.
