Circa 1920-ish. This is an original modular lawyer's or barrister's bookcase with metal knobs and glass doors that open and slide in from the top. The entire bookcase is modular, consisting of five pieces: the top, the bottom and three cabinets that all interlock. Each piece individually is deceptively light, but once put together, it forms a solid bookcase. CREATOR: Macey Furniture Co. DATE OF MANUFACTURE: c.1920-ish. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES: Oak, Glass, Metal. CONDITION: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and sturdy with no wobbles. Minor blemishes on the wood in some places, including the top. DIMENSIONS: H 50.75 in. x W 34 in. x D 12 in. HISTORY The Macey Furniture Co. was founded by Fred Macey, who served as its first chairman along with his brother Frank, who also served as treasurer. In 1892 Fred began a mail-order business selling office desks made by other manufacturers, which were advertised in popular magazine as “the best $25 roll-top office desk in the world.” Pickup information: I am located in Saanich, close to the Monkey Tree Pub and ICBC off McKenzie Ave.
