A full time employee of one of the municipalities was on my property as part of his work responsibilities. He needed to wait for another municipal worker to arrive, and was very "gabby." I am a blue-eyed caucasian person. He asked where I was from and I said, "I'm a Canadian.." No, where are my people from, my grandparents and such. What to do with such an uncomfortable question? I did not want to get into a confrontation about what it might mean to ask, so I said "I'm a prairie mutt, mainly Norwegian and Swedish plus German." He was launched. He began a recruitment tirade about the natural superiority of Nordic peoples, identifying his own European country of origin and lauding its superiority. Beyond doubt, he is an active "white supremacy" proselytizer, and intended to use the time to bring me into whatever formal or informal network he belonged to. I deeply regret that i did not quietly turn on my phone recording device, instead I strongly rebuffed continued conversation and walked away. I wish that was the most frightening part. But what happened when the co-worker returned was in some ways more upsetting. DO NOT TURN AWAY. This is happening in our communities and workplaces. Watch the link below. Fifteen years ago Americans would have laughed out loud at a prediction that something like this was in their future. White supremacy already has adherents here. Yes, I'm afraid. That's why I did not name the municipality. (I had to choose one so i chose the largest.) The guy knows where I live and knows i was stupid enough to take his co-worker, once he arrive back on the scene, aside to tell him what had happened. I asked the 2cd guy to bring it to the managers attention. He said he deplored racism but then demonstated that he valued "go along to get along" more than he deplored racism. The manager was not told, but the White Nationalist was warned off of talking like this on the job. It immediately put me in position for hostile retaliation when they returned the next day. So I am afraid in a small way at a personal level. But in a gigantic way about the future of Canada and beyond.
