This is a terra-cotta chess set crafted by Finnish-Canadian modernist artist Eija Seras. She lived for a period at the U.S. Air Force base in Goose Bay - Labrador, in the 1960s before moving to Toronto and then Windsor - Ontario. All the pieces are signed EIJA on the base. The suede covered board is 16" by 16" square and the tallest figure stands at 3". A unique and very collectible set for any chess or Inuit art collector. An Eija Seras chess set similar to this was exhibited during an official Canada Week exhibition in Tokyo - Japan in 1969, and the artist was awarded the Canadian Design of Merit citation in 1974 by the National Design Council of Canada for her native figures.
