Canoe Outrigger Canoe outrigger system. Ama made in Hawaii (with serial #). Ama is 12’ long and very light. Easy to carry under one arm. The Akas are shop made laminated spruce. The Ama and Akas are designed to be assembled (lashed together) with cord or webbing and also attached to the canoe gunnels or thwarts with lashings. This was and still is the Hawaiian traditional system. Shop made, stainless support and attachment fittings are on the outboard ends of the Akas. This system has been regularly used with an 18’ wooden Chestnut canoe on trips to explore the Gulf Islands. The increased stability was essential for saltwater canoe use. Assembled properly there is enough flexibility and strength to instill confidence. It proved to be an effective island hopper.
